Specialty Care for Huntington’s Disease

Summerfield Health Care Center is one of four specialty communities working with Residents who are diagnosed with Huntington’s disease in the US. We work closely with the Indiana University Huntington’s Disease Center of Excellence, who provides specialized resources to our staff. We understand training is the key to successfully caring for the complex needs of this unique population and continually educate our staff to ensure they are providing exceptional care.

Our training begins with our hiring practices to ensure we have the best employees on board. We take a multi-disciplinary approach to training. Our employees learn about the physiology of the disease and how to manage behaviors from social services. They shadow the food service department to know what to watch for during meal time. The business office even educates the staff on the frustrations some Residents may deal with related to personal finances and the disease.

The team of caregivers at Summerfield Health Care Center work together to create personalized care plans that assists Residents throughout the disease process. We are blessed to have dedicated staff with longevity who realizes how fulfilling their lives can be when working with this special population.
